Caring for hair shears: Cleaning, oiling, and storing
Von Hassieb Kalla · Dr.Kalla RedaktionShare
Is your hair scissor stiff or not cutting as well as it used to? That doesn't automatically mean a new model is immediately necessary. First, check its maintenance condition and the manufacturer's instructions. This guide will help you distinguish between cleaning, storage, and maintenance. If you are looking for a replacement or a second tool afterward, you will find suitable models to compare in our selection of combs and scissors.
Gently removing hair and residue
After use, remove hair and product residue, especially at the joint. Use a soft cloth and the cleaning method approved for your model. Dry thoroughly after any wet cleaning. Cleaning is not a substitute for the necessary disinfection: please follow the hygiene plan and the material approvals provided by the manufacturer. Do not use random agents or mixtures. Keep the appropriate instructions at your workstation so that team members do not each follow different procedures.
Do not confuse maintenance oil and tension
Suitable scissor oil supports the smoothness of the joint; it does not sharpen a dull blade. The amount, location, and frequency depend on the model's instructions. Do not turn the screw as a precaution if the scissor feels unusual. Check the tension according to the manufacturer's specifications and use the appropriate tool. If the cutting performance remains poor despite proper maintenance, have the scissors professionally inspected. Specific instructions for another brand do not replace the guidelines for your own scissors.
Store dry and protected
Store your cleaned, dry scissors in a protected place rather than carrying them loosely among other tools. Plan for a designated spot and a suitable protective case or pouch. When purchasing accessories, check whether your model, including the finger rest, fits inside. An inexpensive set is of little use if the scissors do not sit securely in it. For each pair of scissors, note the model name and corresponding maintenance instructions; this also facilitates any future service requests.
Consciously plan for maintenance or replacement
If maintenance is not enough, ask a qualified scissor service about inspection, costs, and turnaround time. Plan for a suitable backup tool during this time. When purchasing a new pair, in addition to the grip and size, it is worth looking at available manuals and service options. The Iwasaki Master Offset 5.5-inch is one model from our assortment for comparison. The inch size alone does not determine suitability for your hand and cutting technique. Therefore, compare purposefully rather than just by price or product photo.
Check before purchasing accessories
- Are the exact model name and manufacturer's instructions available?
- Are the cleaning agents, oil, and tools explicitly suitable?
- Is the storage appropriate for the size and finger rest?
- Have service costs and backup tools for potential downtime been planned?
First, determine what your existing scissors really need. If you need a replacement model, compare the product details in our assortment based on the task, grip, and size. Clarify any open questions with us before purchasing, rather than ordering unsuitable accessories or an unnecessary second tool.
