Removing yellow tones: How to correctly use silver shampoo and anti-yellow products

Freshly bleached and after a few weeks it's shimmering yellow? That's normal – and it's easy to manage. The most important tool against this is silver shampoo. Here you'll learn why yellow tones occur and how to neutralize them correctly.

Why blonde hair turns yellow

When lightening, dark pigments are removed – but warm, yellow-orange undertones often remain. Additionally, factors like the sun, hard water, heat, and styling amplify the yellow tinge over time.

How silver shampoo works

Silver shampoo contains violet pigments. On the color wheel, violet is exactly opposite yellow – the two tones neutralize each other. The pigment deposits on the hair during washing and visually balances out the yellow tinge. For coppery tones, an anti-orange product also helps.

How to use silver shampoo correctly

Massage into towel-dried or wet hair, distribute evenly, and – depending on the product and desired effect – leave it in for just a short time, often one to three minutes. Rinse thoroughly afterwards. A nourishing mask applied afterwards restores moisture.

How often is it sensible to use?

Not daily. Once or twice a week is usually enough, alternating with your normal shampoo. This keeps the tone cool without too much pigment building up.

The most common mistakes

Leaving it on for too long can leave a purple-grey shimmer, especially on very light hair. Using it too frequently leads to the same effect. When in doubt, it is better to leave it on for a shorter time and check more often – and test it on a single strand the first time.

Distinguishing between yellow and orange tones

Violet pigments primarily balance out yellowish reflections. For clearly orange or coppery reflections, a blue-pigmented product might be more suitable. Very porous or extremely light areas often absorb pigments more quickly; therefore, the processing time there should be monitored particularly carefully.

Frequently asked questions about silver shampoo

Why does the hair turn purple in places?

Usually, porous areas have absorbed more pigment or the product was left on for too long. The effect can often be gradually reduced with a mild shampoo.

Does silver shampoo replace professional color correction?

No. It neutralizes surface reflections, but cannot reliably correct an uneven or significantly different color result.
